"Fidel,"
an award-winning documentary by Cuban-American journalist, Estella Bravo, is a
portrait of the Cuban leader. The film spans a period of 40 years from Castro's
early childhood and college days to his Presidency of Cuba and includes
interviews with Harry Belafonte, Nelson Mandela, Alice Walker, Gabriel
Garcia-Marquez, Sydney Pollock, and others.
Released
from prison after serving two years of a fifteen-year sentence, Castro took a
ragtag army of volunteers and recruited farmers, women, and working people into
the mountains to fight a decade-long guerilla war that led to the overthrow of
American-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista and the victorious Cuban Revolution
of 1959. (91min., 2001)

November 29, 2007 marks the 60th
anniversary of the United Nations vote to divide Palestine, supposedly into
two states, one Jewish and one Arab. There was no consultation before the vote
with Palestinians who made up 70% of the population. The UN vote and the war
that followed created the state of Israel on 78% of Palestine, made refugees
of 750,000 Palestinians, and led to a struggle which continues to the present
day. In the 1970s, November 29 was designated “International Day of
Solidarity with the Palestinian People” by the UN.
Occupation 101
is a thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and
historical root causes of the brutal Israeli occupation of Palestine. Join us

is the story of one of the most vibrant and widespread upheavals of the
1960's–one that had profound impact on American society, yet has been
virtually obliterated from the collective memory of that time. In
the 1960’s an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history.
This movement didn’t take place on college campuses, but in barracks and on
aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy
towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like
West Point. And it spread throughout the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a
movement no one expected, least of all those in it. Hundreds went to
prison and thousands into exile. And by 1971 it had, in the words of one
colonel, infested the entire armed services. A

The Jena 6 are six African
American high school students from Jena, Louisiana, who have been falsely
charged with second degree attempted murder and other similar charges for
allegedly roughing up a white racist classmate in December 2006. A few months
earlier, racist students hung nooses on public school grounds in a tree reserved for whites only.
The case is a racist injustice and shines a light on the institutional
inequality built into the U.S. "justice" system.
One of the Jena 6, 17-year-old
Mychal Bell, was convicted in June by an all-white jury of aggravated battery
and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery. Bell faced up to 22 years in
prison. Two weeks ago, the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana ruled that
Bell was wrongly tried as an adult. The court nullified his conviction. It was
a legal victory. But the struggle for justice is not over. The remaining
five—teenagers as young as 15-years-old—have been indicted and await
trial. And Mychal Bell is still being refused bail.
ANSWER Chicago activist John Beacham joined an ANSWER Coalition delegation to Jena for activities in support of the Jena 6.

New Orleans the first year after Katrina ...
About violence and racism against the poor in America. About a society on its own. And
about hope despite the odds ...
We have all seen the news pictures from New
Orleans. This movie goes further and tells the story about the major breakdown
through the eyes of a local activist, a 58 year old former member of the Black
Panthers who stayed during the hurricane. He became a local hero in the days
after the flooding and is now running a grassroots organization, Common Ground
Collective.

On May 6, Chicago-area anti-war

banner that read "Impeach Bush and Cheney—Liars." They also
displayed an American flag upside-down. Two weeks after this incident, the
DuPage County Sheriff’s office filed criminal charges against the activists.
Police arrested Zurawski at his home. He spent seven hours in jail. Jeff and
Sarah were charged with reckless conduct and unauthorized display of a sign in

Description of talk, "Neo-Colonialism
in the Philippines"
109 years ago, the People of the Philippines declared
Independence from Spain. Shortly after, one of the most bloody conflicts in
the turn of the century would ensue between a rising imperial power and the
people of a newly Independent Nation, the Filipino-American War. This conflict
would open the era of neo-colonialism in the Philippines; an era that
continues to this day. Amid worsening human rights violations in the
Philippines, tightening control of Multi-National Corporations on the
Philippine Economy, and the growing out migration of Philippine
citizens, a vibrant and growing mass movement continues to persist in its
struggle for National Democracy and Social Liberation. As progressive forces
in the United States, our solidarity with the people of the Philippines
becomes urgent and necessary.

March
30 is Day of the Land (“Yaoum Al-Ard”) for the Palestinian people
In 1976, Palestinian Arab masses within the areas colonized by Zionism in 1948
rose up in the
Galilee
(Al-Jaleel) in a popular rebellion against land
expropriation of Palestine. From that day, March 30 has become the embodiment
of the oneness of the Palestinian people in the face of exile, destitution,

since taken place, mostly within 1967 borders, just as they have been all over
Palestine since the turn of the 20th century in opposition of consecutive

* Haiti
Update
On February 29, 2004 U.S. Marines kidnapped Haitian president
Jean Bertrand Aristide and forced him to resign. All over Haiti the anniversary
has been greeted with mass street protests of hundreds of thousands demanding
the return of Aristide. Coordinated protests were held all over the world.
Since Aristide was overthrown the United
Nations - backed by the U.S. - has occupied the country and U.N. troops under
Brazilian leadership have brutally repressed the Haitian people. Militant
struggle has always been a part of the history of
Haiti
. Join us for a discussion and update on the third anniversary of the

* Stop the Attacks
on Immigrants
While the imperialists continue to fight an illegal war in
Iraq
, they are also waging a racist and unjust war on immigrants here at home. In
the past year, the
U.S.
government has dramatically increased attacks on undocumented workers with mass
raids, arrests, and deportations. Since June 2006, there have been 13,000
nationwide arrests under the Homeland Security’s “Operation Return to
Sender”. Before being deported, many Immigrants are held in detention centers
under deplorable conditions. We say no more. Amnesty Now!

“Bread
and Roses” is based on the real life Justice For Janitors campaign in 1990
in Los
Angeles. The film by British director Ken Loach (director of The Wind
that Shakes the Barley - winner of this years Palme d’Or at Cannes
) is a politically and socially aware film about ordinary human dignity in the
face of corporate might and indifference.
Loach draws naturalistic performances from a largely untried cast with Pilar
Padilla - in her acting debut - revealing the spirit and defiance which
characterized the workers' struggle and the plight of those eking out a living
in a foreign and often hostile land
After
surviving a perilous journey from Mexico to the US , Maya (Pilar Padilla)
enlists the help of her hard-working sister Rosa (Elpidia Carrillo) to secure a
job among other immigrant cleaners with a non-union cleaning agency in a
downtown office block. A fated
meeting with Sam (Oscar winner Adrien Brody), a committed activist, leads to a
guerrilla-style maneuver against their employers for standard union benefits. It
is a fight which carries the risk of the loss of livelihoods and deportation
from the US .

The
current economic and military siege of Gaza has lasted nearly a year. The
U.S. backed Israeli aggression over that time has been even more murderous
and brutal than the daily violence and oppression of the occupation. Over
300 Palestinian civilians have died at the hands of Israeli military forces
since June. A November 8 Israeli massacre in the northern Gaza town of Beit
Hanoun killed 18 members of one family and left more than 40 people

Militant struggle by immigrant workers has led to recent victories in

two day action led to workers being reinstated. Join us for a report on

"Fidel,"
an award-winning documentary by Cuban-American journalist, Estella Bravo, is
a portrait of the Cuban leader. The film spans a period of 40 years of
Castro's rule from his early childhood and college days to his Presidency of
Cuba and includes interviews with Harry Belafonte, Nelson Mandela, Alice
Walker, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Sydney Pollock, and others. Rare footage
shows him swimming with his bodyguards, working in the fields cutting sugar
cane, visiting his childhood school and talking with Elian Gonzales, the
six-year old boy who became a rallying point for Cuban exiles in Miami.
Released
from prison after serving two years of a fifteen-year sentence, Castro took
a ragtag army of volunteers and recruited farmers, women, and working people
into the mountains to fight a decade-long guerilla war that led to the
overthrow of American-backed Fulgencio Batista and his takeover of Cuba in
1959. (91min., 2001)

- Analysis & Discussion: Self-determination
for the people of Korea
The Bush Administration is waging a campaign to undermine Korean
sovereignty. This week, as the U.S. continues modernizing its military bases
in the South for its occupation force of 32,000 troops, U.S. diplomats are
in South Korea to promote a destructive free trade agreement. Massive
demonstrations are planned to stop the U.S./Korea Free Trade Agreement.
At the same time, the U.S. is heightening its ongoing campaign to demonize,
isolate and attack the people and the government of North Korea. The Bush
Administration continues to threaten the Democratic People's Republic of
Korea, the government of North Korea, with economic, diplomatic and military
aggression. North Korea is seeking to maintain its independence in the face
of greater U.S. aggression around the world.
The people of Korea want peace and reunification not more aggression by the
U.S. military and U.S. corporations. Join us for an analysis and discussion!

Analysis of Crisis in Palestine, Work Session for Bush Protest
Stop Israeli/U.S. Aggression!
End the Occupation of Palestine Now!
Join us for a discussion of the crisis in Palestine caused by the recent
Israeli invasion of Gaza. The Palestinian population
of Gaza, one of the poorest and most densely populated areas of the world, was
already suffering severe shortages of food, medicine and other necessities due
to Israel's blockade of Gaza and the cut-off of international aid to the West
Bank and Gaza, in effect since January 2006. The new Israeli assault has
resulted in the cut-off of power, water and food supplies to most of the people
in Gaza. The situation constitutes a deliberately created humanitarian disaster,
and now the U.S.-backed Israeli government is "intensifying" its
brutal assault on the Palestinians.
Work Session for Bush Protest
Join us as we make preparations for the July 7 Bush Protest in Chicago. We will
be painting a 12 foot banner that reads: "IMPEACH BUSH NOW!" We will
also be assembling placards that say: "George Bush: Bigot, War

NOW!"

Join
us for an analysis and discussion of the current crisis in Palestine
The U.S. government has imposed a
vicious blockade on the Palestinian people. In response to a freely elected
government that refuses to bend to U.S.-Israeli demands, the U.S. is denying
food, economic and medical aid from reaching millions of Palestinians.
At the same time, Israel
continues to build an apartheid wall to completely surround and cut off the
Palestinian people while stepping up its economic, military and diplomatic
offensive against the people. Israel has sealed off Gaza, one of the most
densely populated and impoverished parts of the world; hospitals have run out of
many medicines, malnutrition is spreading rapidly, and poverty is soaring.

The Tel Rumeida Project: Documenting
Settler and Israeli State Violence in Palestine
Tel Rumeida Project members Chelli
Stanley and John Harmer will speak about the current situation in Tel Rumeida
and present documentary footage of settler attacks filmed in the neighborhood.
The Tel Rumeida Project
www.telrumeidaproject.org
was formed in May 2005 as a response to increased settler violence in the
neighborhood of Tel Rumeida, Hebron, in the West Bank. Tel Rumeida is a small
Palestinian neighborhood widely-acknowledged as housing the most violent and
extremist faction of the Israeli settler movement. Palestinian families who live
directly next to these settlers are often virtual prisoners in their homes,
subject to the settlers' violent attacks and destruction of property. In just
five months, members of the Tel Rumeida Project recorded more than 120 settler
attacks in the small neighborhood. From
the moment internationals began living in Tel Rumeida, the Israeli army and
Kiryat Arba police have tried to remove the international human rights presence
from the neighborhood by using a variety of means, including constant
intimidation, threats, violence, false charges, arrests, and deportation.

(2) U.S. Imperialism and the
Middle East
Join us
for a special report and discussion of U.S. aggression in the Middle East and the history of resistance
and independence in the region.
According to recent polls 70% of people in the U.S. are against the war. In many
parts of the world, especially in the Middle East, the U.S. war on Iraq is even
more unpopular. Yet the Bush Administration continues to threaten Iran,
Palestine, Syria and the people of Iraq with more aggression - military attacks,
economic sanctions and diplomatic assaults.
Today, March 21, at a
White House press conference, President Bush asserted that U.S. troops will
stay in Iraq until at least 2009, and probably longer.
In the last four years, tens of
millions of people around the world have hit the streets to oppose U.S. war and
dominance. Disdainful of the demands of people around the world to end the war,
the U.S. continues to purse a policy of colonial occupation and
empire building. Control of the Middle East is central to this policy of war,
racism and greed.

Guest Speaker Jim
Fennerty of the National Lawyers Guild
just returned from a fact finding delegation to Venezuela. Come hear his report on the
progress of the Venezuelan Revolution.
"Voices
of Venezuela" : A video
of interviews with community people in the progressive social projects or
“Missions” of Venezuela.
Venezuela is
being targeted and threatened by the Bush Administration and members of Congress
for standing up to U.S. bullying and racism in Latin America. The
revolutionary Bolivarian government of Venezuela, led by Hugo Chavez, is
redirecting the country's enormous oil wealth to fund a program of growing improvement in housing, health care, income and education for the vast
majority.
In
partnership with Cuba, Venezuela is also offering material aid and inspiration
to the countries and people of Latin America who are seeking a way out from
under U.S. domination and exploitation. As Venezuela continues to consolidate
and expand its many progressive social gains, defending the Venezuelan
Revolution in the face of U.S. aggression is a crucially important
task for an independent people's movement.
